Barley is a village cricket club established in 1882 when the Gentlemen of Barley played a fixture against Great Chishill in the Plaistow Meadow. In that Barley team were two Chucks, a descendant of which still plays. First entering a local league in 1922 Barley later joined the Webber League in 1976 and promptly won it and then joined the Cambridge Cricket League in 1985. Over the years the team has won many cup finals and league titles, indeed in 1922-23 the team won the Inter-Village Knockout Cup and more recently has been promoted as far as the Cambridgeshire Senior Leagues. Currently playing in Junior 1 we run a Saturday League team and a Sunday team that plays friendly fixtures. A number of the senior players at the club have represented the county at the "Definately Past-It" level. The Team has played games aganst Essex and the MCC and players have over the years been involved in tours to South Wales, Kent, Norfolk as well as Sri Lanka and Kenya.
Anyone wishing to play for us would be most welcome as would wives, friends and children. We are a friendly yet keen team and play at one of the loveliest English grounds you could hope to find. Placed up on our hill, on a clear day, it is said you can climb to the top of a ladder and with a beer in one hand and binoculars in the other see five counties before you fall off.
Anyone wishing to join Barley CC will be most welcome. Ring Eddie Collins with your box size, prefered length of bat and favourite after match cocktail to be sure of a game.
